The head of a UN disarmament think tank has called for pragmatic dialogue between the US and China on military AI amid stalled global rules.
The head of the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research, Geiss, described the current global security environment as “dangerous.” He pointed to proliferation pressures, world tensions, insufficient discussion among superpowers on nuclear weapons, and AI destabilising the entire system.
Geiss proposed a moratorium on crossing critical technical thresholds defined by scientists to avert unintended crises. He said he wished the issue would be addressed between the United States and China.
Zhou Bo, a retired senior colonel in the People’s Liberation Army, said at the event that China and the US, as the dominant AI powers, should lead the rule-making rather than waiting for Europe to take action.
