Utah Utes sign Spanish guard Lucas Langarita

The University of Utah men's basketball team has added 20-year-old shooting guard Lucas Langarita from Spain to its roster for the spring semester. Langarita, who will be immediately eligible to play, brings international experience and scoring ability to the Runnin' Utes. This move addresses recent roster challenges as the team prepares for Big 12 conference play.

Utah basketball announced on December 24, 2025, the addition of Lucas Langarita, a 6-foot-5 shooting guard from Spain, to its program. The 20-year-old will join the team for the second semester and is eligible to compete right away, providing timely reinforcement amid ongoing depth issues.

Langarita previously played under Utah assistant coach Martin Schiller at Casademont Zaragoza in Spain's top professional league, Liga ACB, during the 2022-23 season. Last summer, he impressed in the U20 Eurobasket tournament in Greece, averaging 17.1 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game. He shot 41.5% from the field and 32.7% from three-point range during that competition.

Head coach Alex Jensen expressed enthusiasm about the signing in a statement: “We’re excited to welcome Lucas to our program. He is a gifted young player who will be a positive addition to our team.” General manager Wes Wilcox highlighted the effort behind the acquisition: “After losing a key contributor to injury before the start of the season, our staff worked diligently across the globe to secure a significant mid-year addition. While the timing and his transition from Europe to the NCAA are unique, we’re excited to welcome Lucas to our program as we head into Big 12 play.”

The Utes have faced setbacks this season, including the departure of guard Elijah “Choppa” Moore, a transfer from Syracuse, and an injury to forward Babacar Faye before the campaign began. Jacob Patrick, a German player on the roster, has missed the last two games due to injury, while Finnish freshman Obomate Abbey provides depth, averaging 17.4 minutes per game. Starting guards Terrence Brown and Don McHenry lead the offense, but Langarita's arrival should bolster the wing position for both immediate needs and future seasons.

This international signing underscores Utah's global recruiting ties, particularly through Schiller's European connections, as the team enters conference competition after the new year.
