A Nevada Walmart manager has been charged with failing to stop at the scene of a fatal crash that killed a skateboarder last month. Prosecutors allege he struck the victim and then falsified his time card to hide his involvement.
Elijah Malone, 26, is accused of hitting 28-year-old Ivan Aguilera with a Ram pickup truck around 10:30 p.m. on June 4 along North Oso Blanca Road in Las Vegas. The impact sent Aguilera's body more than 100 feet, and neither the driver nor the vehicle remained at the scene.
The body was discovered the next afternoon. Malone turned himself in after altering his Walmart time card to suggest he was at work during the crash, according to prosecutors. His first court appearance was on July 3.
Defense attorney Warren Geller said Malone stopped and flashed his lights but found no victim. He added that investigators indicated Malone was not at fault and that Aguilera may have been skateboarding dangerously. Bail was reduced to $100,000 with driving limited to work travel only.
Malone faces eight to 20 years in prison if convicted. Aguilera's family expressed grief over the loss and questioned the defense account.
