Will Trent showrunners discuss James Ulster's potential return

Showrunners of the ABC series Will Trent say they feel they have turned the page on the James Ulster storyline after Season 4's events. They remain open to bringing back the character played by Greg Germann in a fresh way. The team also expressed hopes for Mark-Paul Gosselaar to reprise his role as Paul Campano in Season 5.

In the Season 4 finale of Will Trent, which aired on Tuesday, the arc involving serial killer James Ulster reached a close. Ulster, portrayed by Greg Germann since Season 1, had been imprisoned for crimes including the murder of Will's mother, Lucy Morales. He escaped in the Season 4 premiere, took a bullet for Will, and later haunted him as a 'dark passenger.' His daughter, Adelaide Clemens played by Mallory Jansen, left Will for dead in Puerto Rico, kidnapped Antonio, and orchestrated the murder of GBI Deputy Director Amanda Wagner, played by Sonja Sohn. Will shot and killed Adelaide and rescued Antonio, providing emotional closure for his character. The Season 4 finale airs Tuesday, May 5 at 8 p.m. on ABC and streams on Hulu. Co-showrunners Liz Heldens, Karine Rosenthal, and Daniel Thomsen discussed the finale with TVLine late last week. Thomsen said, 'It's a tough thing to answer... we all kind of had the feeling that we were turning the page.' He added that Ulster's return would depend on finding 'a fresh way that Ulster could reappear on Will's shoulder and bring something to the story that is unexpected.' Fans welcomed the Season 4 return of Mark-Paul Gosselaar as Paul Campano, absent since Season 1. Paul, a fellow foster child, helped Will confront his darker instincts, with Paul noting that survivors of such childhoods carry a 'monster inside' but choose how to use it. Heldens said, 'That was one of my favorite episodes. I love him and I love Paul.' Rosenthal added, 'Believe me, we already have ideas for him. It's just a matter of whether we can get him for enough episodes [in Season 5].'
