Iván Sanz Cid, director of Dehesa de los Canónigos winery, died on Sunday with his wife Irene Garijo and two of their children in a traffic accident in Palencia.
The accident occurred on Sunday, July 5, at 16:20 on the A-67 motorway, kilometer 83, in Herrera de Pisuerga. The Ford Bronco vehicle left the road and rolled over several times. The government sub-delegation pointed to possible driver drowsiness as the initial hypothesis.
Iván Sanz Cid, aged 48, was the general director of Dehesa de los Canónigos in Pesquera de Duero. Together with his sister Belén he expanded the winery to international markets after his father Luis Sanz died a year ago. His wife Irene Garijo worked at the Valladolid Provincial Council.
The nine-year-old daughter survived and was airlifted to Burgos hospital, where she underwent surgery and is in stable but serious condition. The wake for the four deceased will be held on Monday from 17:00 at the Las Contiendas funeral home in Valladolid.
Transport Minister Óscar Puente and Castilla y León regional president Alfonso Fernández Mañueco expressed condolences on social media. Fellow winemakers highlighted Sanz Cid's generosity and professionalism.
