Swedish forward Alexander Wennberg has agreed to a three-year, $18 million contract extension with the San Jose Sharks, securing his future with the team. The 31-year-old, who could have become an unrestricted free agent after this season, continues to perform strongly in his second year with the club. Wennberg was recently named to Sweden's roster for the 2026 Olympic Winter Games.
San Jose Sharks general manager Mike Grier announced on Sunday that the team has re-signed forward Alexander Wennberg to a three-year contract worth $18 million, with an average annual value of $6 million. This extension comes as Wennberg, a 31-year-old native of Stockholm, Sweden, enters his second season with the Sharks after signing a two-year, $10 million deal on July 1, 2024. He joined the franchise ahead of the previous season and earned the role of assistant captain for the current campaign, wearing the "A" on his jersey.
In 41 games this season, Wennberg has recorded 26 points, including seven goals and 19 assists, tying him for third on the team in total points and second in assists. He is also tied for 10th among Swedish forwards league-wide in assists. Wennberg has notched points in three consecutive games on three separate occasions this year, highlighted by back-to-back three-point performances on December 11 at Toronto and December 13 at Pittsburgh, contributing to come-from-behind victories. Last season, he tallied 35 points in 77 regular-season games.
Over his NHL career, Wennberg has played 830 regular-season games across five teams—Columbus Blue Jackets, Florida Panthers, New York Rangers, Seattle Kraken, and now the Sharks—amassing 396 points (108 goals, 288 assists). Selected 14th overall by Columbus in the 2013 NHL Draft, he has also appeared in 58 Stanley Cup Playoff games, scoring 19 points (eight goals, 11 assists), with a career-high seven points in the 2023 playoffs for Seattle.
Prior to the NHL, Wennberg spent one season with Frolunda HC in the Swedish Hockey League, where he led juniors in goals and was named Swedish Junior Hockey Player of the Year. Internationally, he has represented Sweden at multiple World Championships, earning a bronze in 2025, and won silver medals at the 2013 and 2014 World Junior Championships. His selection to Sweden's roster for the 2026 Milano Cortina Olympics underscores his continued value on the international stage.
The Sharks, currently holding a 20-18-3 record, will host the Blue Jackets on Tuesday.
