Coinbase legal chief Grewal to transition to advisory role

Coinbase Chief Legal Officer Paul Grewal will depart the company on July 31 to join a startup but will continue as an adviser. Molly Abraham will take over as general counsel.

Grewal made the announcement Thursday after leading the exchange through its years-long legal battle with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. The SEC suit, filed in 2023, was dropped after President Donald Trump returned to office.

Grewal said the fight was the greatest achievement of his six-year tenure at Coinbase. He noted that the legal wins helped ensure crypto could flourish in the United States. He will also continue advising on the company's trust charter work with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency.

Abraham has served at Coinbase since March 2021 as vice president of legal. Ryan Van Grack, formerly head of litigation, will become vice chairman in a broader role.
