Unabhängigkeitserklärung 1952 in das Nationalarchiv überführt

Nach jahrzehntelanger Debatte über die Verwahrung wurden die Unabhängigkeitserklärung und die Verfassung am 13. Dezember 1952 von der Library of Congress in das Nationalarchiv in Washington verlegt. Die Überführung beendete einen langjährigen Streit und brachte die Dokumente in einem neuen, zu ihrem Schutz entworfenen Schrein unter.

Die Dokumente trafen unter strengen Sicherheitsvorkehrungen im Gebäude des Nationalarchivs ein. Eine gepanzerte Prozession transportierte sie die Constitution Avenue entlang, während Truppen die Route säumten. Der Archivar Wayne Grover übernahm offiziell die Verwahrung innerhalb der Rotunde unter der dreiundzwanzig Meter hohen Kuppel.
