Dylan Cease loses no-hitter bid in ninth inning

Dylan Cease of the Toronto Blue Jays took a no-hitter into the ninth inning against the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday but lost the bid when Heliot Ramos singled to open the frame. The Blue Jays won the game 10-0 at Oracle Park. Cease finished with eight scoreless innings, 11 strikeouts and three walks.

Cease entered the ninth at a career-high 115 pitches after allowing no hits through eight innings. Ramos lined a sinker back up the middle on the third pitch of the inning to end the no-hit attempt. Fans from both teams gave Cease a standing ovation as he left the field.

Blue Jays manager John Schneider said he allowed Cease to continue pitching because the right-hander had thrown a no-hitter before and was durable. Cease had asked to keep going, telling reporters afterward that he was prepared to throw up to 130 pitches. Pitching coach Pete Walker noted the team had not had a no-hitter during his time with the club.

The performance left Cease with a 2.56 ERA and 148 strikeouts in 98 1/3 innings this season. He previously threw a no-hitter for the San Diego Padres in 2024 and is a candidate to start the All-Star Game for the American League. The Blue Jays improved to 44-49 with the victory.
