Eight injured in wind storm in Catalonia

A wind storm with gusts up to 168.5 km/h has injured eight people in Catalonia on Sunday, mainly in northern counties. Protección Civil has logged hundreds of calls over fallen objects and advised restricting movement. Several roads are closed and trains suspended on some lines.

Northern winds have battered Catalonia since early morning, with maximum gusts of 168.5 km/h in Portbou (Alt Empordà), 154.4 km/h at Queralt sanctuary (Berguedà), and 135.4 km/h in Darnius, according to Meteocat. The weather service issued danger level 5/6 alerts for wind in the north.

Protección Civil received around 600 calls by midday and firefighters over 500 by 13:00, mostly for fallen objects. Eight people were injured: three at a Camarasa (Lleida) campsite—a 60-year-old woman and two minors hit by a roof panel—taken to Arnau de Vilanova hospital in less serious condition. In Girona province, a man injured by a branch in Castell-Platja d’Aro, two women in Blanes and Calonge by fallen debris, and two more in La Jonquera, all with minor or less serious injuries.

Four roads closed in Girona due to snow and fallen trees, including BV-4024 at Coll de Pal and GI-502 in Darnius. Chains mandatory on ten Lleida roads. Renfe suspended trains on Figueres-Portbou and Vic-Ripoll lines until at least 13:00. The Catalan Football Federation canceled matches in affected counties.

Protección Civil sent an Es-Alert Saturday night to six counties: Solsonès, Berguedà, northern Cerdanya, Ripollès, Garrotxa, and Alt Empordà. Meteocat forecasts the peak until 20:00, with strong winds lingering the next few days.
