A former staffer for Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) came forward on Friday with allegations that the congressman sexually assaulted her on two occasions when she was too intoxicated to consent, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. The incidents reportedly occurred in September 2019 and April 2024. The woman shared medical records related to STD and pregnancy testing with CNN and confided in family and friends shortly after the alleged 2024 assault. Swalwell's attorneys sent her a cease-and-desist letter on Thursday.Three other women separately told CNN of misconduct by Swalwell. Democratic content creator Ally Sammarco said she received nude messages from him after connecting on social media. “I truly never thought he would respond – I had like 1,000 followers at the time,” Sammarco said. “And he actually responded.” Another woman accused him of kissing her and touching her leg without consent at a bar.Swalwell, a leading candidate in the Democratic primary for California governor, denied the claims. “These allegations are false and come on the eve of an election against the front-runner for governor,” he said. “For nearly 20 years, I have served the public – as a prosecutor and a congressman and have always protected women. I will defend myself with the facts and where necessary bring legal action.” He canceled a town hall on Thursday, citing illness, drawing criticism from rival Antonio Villaraigosa, who called it hiding from voters.Democratic allies reacted swiftly. Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA) withdrew his endorsement, saying, “I am deeply distressed by its allegations. This woman was brave to come forward.” Sen. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ), the California Teachers Association, and SEIU also suspended support. Swalwell's odds on Kalshi prediction markets fell to 15% from around 50%.
