Google has ended support for the Tenor GIF API effective June 30, 2026. The move affects platforms including X, Discord, WhatsApp, and Bluesky that previously relied on the service for animated images.
Google acquired Tenor in 2018 and integrated its GIF database into products such as Gboard and Google Messages. The company announced plans to wind down the public API in January 2026 and stopped accepting new integrations at that time.
“As part of an ongoing effort to focus resources on enhancing our core products, we’ve made the decision to sunset the Tenor API on June 30, 2026,” Google stated. Tenor continues to operate for Google’s own apps and the Tenor website.
Several platforms have already switched to alternatives. X migrated away from Tenor by June 20. Discord has adopted Klipy for most users, while WhatsApp and Bluesky are also moving to Klipy integration. Klipy was founded by Tenor’s original creator and recently raised $3.8 million, with Google among the investors.
