Government to invest 700 billion won in manufacturing AI transformation in 2026

The South Korean government plans to invest 700 billion won ($478 million) in 2026 to support artificial intelligence (AI) transformation in the manufacturing sector. This includes developing on-device AI chips and promoting exports of AI factories. The Manufacturing AX (M.AX) Alliance, involving around 1,300 companies, will lead these efforts.

The South Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources announced key projects on December 24, 2025, for the AI transformation of the manufacturing sector in 2026. The Manufacturing AX (M.AX) Alliance, launched in September, is a government-led coalition involving over 1,300 manufacturing and AI companies, including Hyundai Motor Group, LG Electronics, Samsung Electronics, and Rainbow Robotics. It forms part of the ministry's core initiative to position South Korea as a global leader in manufacturing AI transformation.

The five major projects include developing AI models for robotics, automobiles, and AI factories; creating on-device AI semiconductors; and promoting AI factory exports. The government plans to invest at least 100 billion won by 2030 in building an AI database for manufacturing industries and another 700 billion won by 2032 for customized AI models in AI factories, future mobility, and AI robots.

The alliance aims to develop on-device AI chips for automobiles, robots, and home appliances, releasing a test product by 2028 and producing 10 types of AI semiconductors by 2030. Overall, it targets generating more than 100 trillion won in added value by 2030 through AI transformation of key industries, with plans for mass production of humanoid robots in 2029 and self-driving cars in 2030.

Hyundai Motor Group announced a 9 trillion won investment in the Saemangeum area of North Jeolla Province to build an AI data center, robotics cluster, and hydrogen facilities. The initiative was revealed at an MOU signing ceremony attended by President Lee Jae Myung, who vowed strong government support. The project is projected to create about 70,000 jobs and generate 16 trillion won in economic value.

The Korean government plans to invest a combined 750 billion won ($502.8 million) over the next two years to commercialize artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled products, the finance ministry said on March 18. The plan was finalized at a meeting of economy-related ministers chaired by Finance Minister Koo Yun-cheol, as part of a blueprint for a 'super-innovation economy'.

Amid ongoing global trade uncertainties, South Korea plans to counter economic challenges in 2026 by capitalizing on the artificial intelligence boom and its semiconductor sector. Experts highlight robust exports and a U.S. tariff deal as growth drivers, while pointing to Chinese competition and weak domestic demand as key risks.

South Korea's science and education ministries discussed on Thursday ways to foster artificial intelligence (AI) talent through programs in elementary and middle schools. The meeting focused on joint efforts to provide AI education across all school stages, including platforms for students to engage directly with data and AI models.

Building on robust corporate earnings reported earlier, South Korea's electronics and telecommunications shipments hit a record 340.5 trillion won in 2024, up 26.4 percent, driven by AI demand. This caps a strong year for manufacturing amid global chip recovery.

Analysts suggest China’s rapid AI adoption may limit the economic fallout from its rapidly ageing population. As fertility rates fall across Asia, sustaining growth with fewer workers poses a daunting challenge. The region’s deep semiconductor, tech hardware, and machinery ecosystems enable faster and cheaper deployment than other regions.
