Kalmar sells star forward AJ Vanderbeck to Pelicans

Kalmar HC has sold its star forward AJ Vanderbeck to Finnish club Pelicans, effective immediately. The 28-year-old American, who finished second in Hockeyallsvenskan scoring last season, has already left the team and will miss tonight's game against Oskarshamn. The deal, worth over one million SEK including his remaining salary, aims to bolster the club's roster depth.

The transfer of AJ Vanderbeck came as a surprise to many fans, given his recent contract extension with Kalmar. Last season, Vanderbeck tallied 63 points (goals and assists) in 51 games, making him one of the league's top performers and drawing interest from multiple clubs. Despite a solid start this year with 15 points in 18 matches, Kalmar opted to accept an offer from Pelicans, who are struggling in the Liiga standings.

According to sources, the economic rationale drove the decision. The package exceeds one million Swedish kronor and covers Vanderbeck's remaining salary, allowing Kalmar to redistribute funds across the team. This could help retain forward Samuel Jonsson through the season and secure a permanent deal for loaned player Victor Laz from Skellefteå. Sportchef Daniel Stolt has been contacted for comment but referred to an upcoming club statement.

Vanderbeck's departure leaves Kalmar without one of its key offensive threats, especially as they face local rival Oskarshamn tonight. The club, which extended Vanderbeck on a high-value contract after last season's success, now focuses on financial flexibility amid a challenging campaign. Pelicans, coming off a tough year, gain a proven scorer to aid their turnaround.
