Maingear releases limited 1990s-inspired Retro98 gaming PC

Gaming PC maker Maingear has unveiled the Retro98, a nostalgic computer that mimics 1990s beige designs while packing modern high-end specs. The company plans to produce only 32 units, starting at $2,499, featuring a functional Turbo button that maximizes cooling. Despite the retro exterior, it includes Nvidia RTX 50x0 graphics and Windows 11.

Maingear, a gaming PC manufacturer, is tapping into 1990s nostalgia with its Retro98 series, described as having '1998 on the outside — 2026 inside.' The beige-colored machines evoke the era's old-school aesthetics, complete with a working Turbo button. Unlike the original turbo buttons from the 1980s and 1990s that toggled CPU speeds for compatibility with slower games, this version boosts cooling to maximum settings instead.

Under the hood, the Retro98 boasts cutting-edge components, including Nvidia GeForce RTX 50x0 graphics cards, 1TB or 2TB NVMe SSD drives, and Windows 11. Maingear offers four models, each differentiated by the GPU and processor:
- Retro98 5070 for $2,499 with Intel Core Ultra 7 265K
- Retro98 5080 for $3,499 with AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D
- Retro98 5090 for $4,999 with AMD Ryzen 7 9850X3D
- Retro98α for $9,799 with AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D

Production is strictly limited to 32 units total, which could lead to quick sell-outs. However, as of a recent Friday inquiry, a Maingear spokesperson confirmed that units were still available. For those interested in a DIY version, the Silverstone FLP02 beige case is sold separately for $299.

This release arrives amid a resurgence of 1990s trends in tech and culture, from revivals of Walkmans and cassettes to postgrunge music. Desktop gaming remains robust despite competition from handhelds and laptops, underscoring the enduring appeal of customizable PCs.
