Metallic spheres from rocket wash up on Queensland beach

Six metallic spheres washed ashore on Forrest Beach in Queensland over the weekend. Authorities have identified them as likely rocket debris from a foreign launch vehicle.

The spheres, each about twice the size of a basketball, appeared on the small coastal town over the weekend. The Australian Space Agency stated that the objects match debris from a rocket body that recently re-entered the atmosphere.

Police confirmed the items posed no danger to residents. The Forrest Beach Fire Department noted that additional debris could appear in coming days and advised against handling any found objects.

Local businesses responded with humor. The Forrest Beach Supermarket urged residents to "panic buy," while Forrest Beach Takeaway offered an alien-themed snack box.

Space archaeologist Alice Gorman of Flinders University explained that the spheres are titanium pressure vessels commonly known as "space balls" in the industry. She noted they are a frequent type of intact rocket debris.

This marks the latest instance of space junk reaching Earth, following a similar event in New Zealand in 1972.
