CARTV approves face-to-face debate between Azcón and Alegría on Aragón TV, after her prior acceptance

Following Pilar Alegría's acceptance of a face-to-face debate with Jorge Azcón during her December candidacy launch, the PP and PSOE have voted in favor of holding it on Aragón TV for the February 8 regional elections, pending ratification. A debate with all eight parties in the Cortes was also approved, but IU and CHA plan to appeal to the Electoral Board.

The electoral committee of the Corporación Aragonesa de Radio y Televisión (CARTV) met on Thursday to approve a draft Coverage Plan for the February 8 Regional Elections. This includes a face-to-face debate between PP candidate Jorge Azcón and PSOE candidate Pilar Alegría—following her acceptance last December and the PP's request for it on Aragón TV—as well as a multi-party encounter with the eight parties represented in the Cortes de Aragón.

PP and PSOE were the only votes in favor; the proposals now await ratification by CARTV's board and the Electoral Board. Izquierda Unida (IU) and Chunta Aragonesista (CHA) announced appeals against the face-to-face format once finalized.

Such a two-candidate debate was last held in the 2015 regional elections (Luisa Fernanda Rudi vs. Javier Lambán), not in 2019 or 2023. CARTV proposes January 26 for the face-to-face and February 2 for the eight-party debate.

PSOE insists the College of Journalists arbitrate and select moderators amid multiple media requests. Final approval of the Coverage Plan, including airtime allocations for TV and radio, is set for Monday.

This complements RTVE's plans: an eight-party debate on February 5 and a face-to-face date TBD. CARTV emphasizes its history of inclusive debates in regional, local, general, and European elections.

Pilar Alegría, the PSOE candidate for the presidency of Aragón, accepted a face-to-face electoral debate with Jorge Azcón on Saturday while presenting her candidacy in her hometown of La Zaida. In an emotional speech, she criticized the regional president's management and advocated for a project of progress and equality. The PP, meanwhile, will request that the debate be held on Aragón Televisión.

Aragón's president Jorge Azcón has dismissed Minister Pilar Alegría's proposal to agree on regional budgets, amid a tense meeting filled with mutual criticisms. Alegría accuses Azcón of calling elections out of whim or incompetence, while the PP labels the socialist offer as phony. This paves the way for early polls in February.

The televised election debate on Canal Extremadura, featuring ten candidates, lasted nearly three hours with little confrontation until the final minutes. Moderated by Manu Pérez, the event consisted of pre-set monologues that restricted idea exchange among key contenders like PP's María Guardiola and PSOE's Miguel Ángel Gallardo. Despite hopes, it did not shift the campaign dynamics ahead of the December 21 elections.

Following the PP's victory in Extremadura's December 21 elections—securing 29 seats but needing Vox's 11 for a majority—acting president María Guardiola contacted Vox leader Óscar Fernández last Tuesday to initiate government formation talks. The brief, cordial call prioritized regional stability over positions, with negotiations hinging on Vox's previously rejected 206-measure document.

The meeting between PSOE and Sumar on Friday yielded no significant agreements to resolve the coalition government's crisis. Sumar criticizes the PSOE's immobilist stance and warns that the blockade could jeopardize the investiture pact, while the socialists view the encounter positively and stress zero tolerance for corruption.
