Remulla requests one-year extension for Marantan’s police service

Department of the Interior and Local Government Secretary Juanito Victor Remulla has asked the National Police Commission to extend the service of Calabarzon regional police chief Police Brigadier General Hansel Marantan by one year beyond his mandatory retirement age of 56.

In a letter verified by Rappler, Remulla stated the extension would ensure continuity in critical operations led by Marantan. The request, submitted to the executive secretary’s office for approval by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., follows Republic Act No. 6975, which permits a one-year retention for officers at the rank of police brigadier general.

Marantan is scheduled to retire on July 10. Remulla noted that all brigadier generals are eligible for such extensions, though they are uncommon except for PNP chiefs.

Marantan previously served as Davao City’s top police officer and headed the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group in Metro Manila. In June 2025, a Manila court cleared him and 11 other officers in a 2013 incident in Quezon province where 13 people were killed during an alleged shootout.
