Tesla's Full Self-Driving (Supervised) system has reached a significant milestone, with owners collectively driving over 7 billion miles. This figure includes more than 2.5 billion autonomous miles on city roads, highlighting the vast real-world data accumulated by the company. The milestone underscores Tesla's push for safer autonomous driving through scale and data.
Tesla announced on its newly launched FSD safety page that owners have driven more than 7 billion miles using Full Self-Driving (Supervised), a figure that includes over 2.5 billion autonomous miles on city roads. The page, introduced last month, features a live mileage counter that updates in real time as more miles are added. Tesla notes that the total may be even higher, as it might not fully capture contributions from a rapidly expanding global fleet or recent free trial periods.
On the safety page, Tesla states: “FSD (Supervised) enables your vehicle to drive you almost anywhere with your active supervision, requiring minimal intervention. When engaged and under your active supervision, your likelihood of being in a collision goes down.” This claim supports Tesla's efforts to demonstrate to regulators and drivers that supervised autonomy can reduce collision risks compared to human driving.
The milestone coincides with international expansion. In South Korea, Tesla's seventh FSD market, drivers surpassed 1 million kilometers just one month after launch earlier this week. The company is lobbying for broader approvals, including in the EU, where it has offered FSD ride-alongs to lawmakers and the public.
Recent software updates include FSD v14.2.1, which permits limited texting behind the wheel under suitable road and traffic conditions. In Austin, Texas, Tesla's Robotaxi fleet is testing an unsupervised version of FSD, which recently chauffeured Elon Musk with what he called “perfect driving.” Upcoming FSD v14.3 is teased as the “last big piece” of the autonomy puzzle, bolstering Tesla's argument that data scale could prevail in self-driving development.
