The Strokes veröffentlichten die neue Single im Rahmen der Vorbereitungen für ihr Album Reality Awaits, das am 26. Juni erscheinen soll. Das von Rick Rubin produzierte Album markiert die Rückkehr der Gruppe nach ihrer Veröffentlichung The New Abnormal aus dem Jahr 2020. „Falling Out of Love“ setzt den Auto-Tune-Stil fort, der bereits auf der im letzten Monat erschienenen Single „Going Shopping“ zu hören war, die zunächst auf Kassette an eine kleine Gruppe von Fans verteilt wurde.
