President Donald Trump canceled a planned signing ceremony for the 21st Century Road to Housing Act on Wednesday. He linked the move to passage of the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act. The housing measure had cleared Congress with strong bipartisan support.
Trump announced the cancellation in a mid-morning Truth Social post. He stated the event would remain off until lawmakers passed the SAVE Act, which he called a national emergency.
The bill had been set for signing at noon in National Statuary Hall at the U.S. Capitol. It passed the House 358 to 32 and received similar backing in the Senate.
Speaker of the House Mike Johnson said he had discussed the SAVE Act with Trump earlier that morning. Johnson noted the measure had passed the House multiple times but remained stalled in the Senate.
Trump also criticized Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s role in the housing legislation and urged Republicans to advance the voter eligibility bill first.
