Typhoon Bavi made landfall late on Saturday in Taizhou, eastern China. Nearly 2 million people were evacuated ahead of the storm, which had earlier struck Japan's southern islands and passed near Taiwan.
The typhoon reached land at around 11:20 p.m. local time with maximum sustained winds of 144 km per hour, according to China's National Meteorological Center. It had earlier brought heavy rain and strong winds to Japan's Sakishima island chain, including Ishigaki in Okinawa Prefecture, where flights and ferries were suspended.
In Taiwan, authorities evacuated more than 14,000 people from mountainous areas and cancelled 920 international flights plus all domestic services. Most cities declared a typhoon holiday for Saturday.
State media reported evacuations of more than 1.7 million in Zhejiang Province, over 100,000 each in Fujian and Beijing, and 34,000 in Shanghai. No deaths were reported in Japan or Taiwan, though 17 people died in the Philippines from related rains.
Residents in affected areas expressed calm. Wenzhou's Huang Xinghuan said his family had stocked two to three days of supplies and felt no need to panic.
