Virginia woman charged with poisoning husband using horse tranquilizer

A 45-year-old Virginia woman faces first-degree murder charges after police recorded her confessing to poisoning her husband with horse tranquilizer and insulin.

Amanda Christina Hawkins was charged following an investigation into the November 2025 death of her husband, James Matthew Hawkins.

Police said an informant reported hearing her admit to administering the substances days before his death at a Tennessee hospice. Officers recorded her making the admission during a June 15 interview.

Hawkins also faces two counts of distributing Schedule II controlled substances and one count of money laundering. She remains held without bond at the Abingdon Regional Jail.

Her next court appearance is scheduled for August 19.
