A 50-year-old Australian man has been fined and given a suspended jail term by a Hong Kong court for leaving restaurants without paying on four occasions.
Samuel Anthony Monkivitch appeared in Eastern Court on Friday, where he pleaded guilty to four counts of making off without payment and two counts of criminal damage. The court fined him HK$2,000 and ordered him to pay HK$2,039 in compensation to two Shangri-La hotels in Admiralty and Tsim Sha Tsui plus a Japanese restaurant. The offences took place between April 24 and May 5. Monkivitch used excuses including telling staff that breakfast was included in his booking. Last month he was fined HK$3,000 by Principal Magistrate David Cheung Chi-wai for similar offences.
