Burned firefighter recounts reconstruction 22 years later

On July 25 2026, Frédéric Maggiani, lieutenant-colonel with the Bouches-du-Rhône firefighters, shared his account of his 2004 accident on the show Voix Intérieure.

On July 24 2004, Frédéric Maggiani was severely burned during an intervention. He stated: « le feu m’entoure devant et derrière moi ». He then described his collapse and the intense pain that followed.

Aged 31 at the time, he endured a coma, lengthy rehabilitation and amputation of several fingers. In total, 37 percent of his skin was burned. He published the book À l’épreuve du feu with his wife Frédérique in 2007.

Twenty-two years later, Maggiani declared: « Je suis en vie donc je ne demande qu’à vivre ». He highlighted the role of his children in his recovery and the need to rebuild a couple’s life and family home.
