The Chamber of Deputies approved by 77 votes in favor, 68 against and one abstention the admissibility of the constitutional accusation against former Finance Minister Nicolás Grau. The Senate will decide on the substance of the indictment next Tuesday, June 30.
The vote took place on Wednesday in the lower house. Lawmakers from the ruling coalition and opposition backed admissibility over alleged breaches of probity, violation of financial duties and budget disarray.
The Senate must now review the indictment in at least two sessions starting Tuesday, June 30. Several senators expressed discomfort with the calendar, which forces cancellation of regional activities and rescheduling of travel.
Senate President Paulina Núñez set the date to meet legal deadlines. Senators from various benches noted that the filing created logistical complications for those traveling from remote regions.
