The Chilean Senate approved on Wednesday the idea of legislating President José Antonio Kast's National Reconstruction Plan by 26 votes in favor, 23 against and one abstention.
The vote took place at 6:00 p.m. after a debate in the Senate chamber. The bill now moves to its particular discussion in the Finance, Labor and Environment committees, with a deadline for amendments until July 6.
Finance Minister Jorge Quiroz thanked the ruling coalition for its support and said that in the next stage ideas will be collected to broaden the base of backing. “This is one more step in the progress of this highly relevant bill for the country,” he said.
Biminister Claudio Alvarado highlighted the result as progress toward economic reactivation. Acting SEGPRES Minister Constanza Castillo valued that there is a majority willing to build agreements.
Opposition senators, such as those from the Socialist Party, announced their rejection due to lack of prior dialogue, while the bill maintains the suma urgency set by the Executive.
