The finance commission approved the core of president josé antonio kast’s reconstruction megaproject on thursday after 15 hours of debate. The progress leaves divisions in the christian democrats between deputies and senators, while the opposition plans to obstruct the process.
The national reconstruction project passed the chamber’s finance commission in the early hours of thursday. Finance minister jorge quiroz secured key votes from the party of the people to cut corporate taxes.
Christian democrat deputies and senators hold differing positions. Senators francisco huenchumilla and iván flores announced they will reject the idea of legislating. Deputies, however, maintain talks with the executive and seek flexibility on points such as tax stability.
The opposition prepares a new wave of amendments for the floor vote. Frente Amplio deputy consuelo veloso called to obstruct the advance. Commission president agustín romero warned that maneuvers to delay debate will not be allowed.
The bill will be voted on the floor between tuesday may 19 and wednesday may 20. The process continues in the environment and labor committees.
