A Florida woman faces charges after allegedly striking her pickleball opponent with a paddle during an argument at a St. Augustine park. The incident occurred on May 31 and led to her arrest last week.
Michele Lauren Bannister stands accused of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and providing false identification to law enforcement. The confrontation began over retrieving a ball and escalated after the victim criticized her son's playing style.
According to the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office, Bannister struck the man in the head multiple times, causing cuts and significant bleeding. She initially gave officers a fake name but provided her real address, leading to her identification.
Bannister claimed she was protecting her son from attack. Detectives found no evidence of an imminent threat based on statements from the victim and witnesses. Her defense attorney described her actions as necessary to prevent violence against her child.
Deputies arrested Bannister, who later posted bond. Her next court appearance is scheduled for July 28.
