This week's Billboard Japan Book Hot 100 highlights the enduring popularity of manga adaptations and original series in Japan. Soso no Frieren volume 15 by Kanehito Yamada and Tsukasa Abe secured the number one position, leading in physical-store sales at number one, e-books at number one, and electronic commerce at number three. It also ranked within the top 50 on social media, contributing to its overall lead. The series, a high fantasy tale, is preparing for its second anime season in January 2026, which may further boost its visibility.
Trailing closely, volume 21 of Kusuriya no Hitorigoto, the manga adaptation of The Apothecary Diaries by Hyuuganatsu, Minoji Kurata, and Touko Shino, entered at number two. It placed third in physical stores and second in e-books. Debuting at number three is The JOJOLands volume 7 by Hirohiko Araki, which achieved strong results across multiple categories: second in physical stores, fourteenth in EC, and seventh in e-books.
Further down the chart, volume 6 of Henna Ie, or The Strange House by Uketsu and Kyo Ayano, opened at number seven, with fifth place in physical stores and eleventh in e-books. Kanae Minato's Ningen Hyouhon, translated as Human Specimens, surged to number eight from outside the top 20, propelled by the December 19 premiere of its live-action drama adaptation on Prime Video. The book ranked eleventh in physical stores and seventh on social media, while charting in all five metrics including EC, e-books, and subscriptions.
The full top 10 includes titles like Uma Musume: Cinderella Gray volume 22 at number four and World Trigger volume 29 at number ten. Notably, no chart will be released on January 1, 2026; the next update covering December 22 to 28 will appear on January 8, followed by the December 29 to January 4 period on January 9.
