Mourning has gripped Kisii High School for Boys following the death of Form Three student Onesmas Raini this week. He collapsed in class and lost consciousness before being rushed to hospital, where he passed away shortly after. His impoverished family has appealed for assistance with funeral arrangements.
On Wednesday, Kisii High School for Boys was overcome with grief after 16-year-old Form Three student Onesmas Raini died following a collapse in class. The incident occurred on Tuesday during a lesson, when the student suddenly lost consciousness. He was rushed to Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital (KTRH) for treatment but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
His sister, Dorcah Bosibori, recounted receiving a call from the school Tuesday night informing them that their relative had been taken to hospital. Upon arriving, they found his body covered with a sheet in the emergency area. “He was confirmed dead and they were waiting for us before moving his body to the mortuary,” Bosibori said, tears streaming as she stood outside the mortuary on Wednesday morning.
Bosibori added that she had spoken with Onesmas just a week earlier, on January 22, 2026, when he asked for money. “I asked if he had used up all his pocket money that my mother had given him... Without asking more, I sent it to him,” she said. His widowed mother has been raising him single-handedly from a poor family background and had high hopes for his future.
The family is seeking help from well-wishers to organize the funeral while awaiting a post-mortem to determine the cause of death. The incident has left the school and community reflecting on student health concerns.
