Kenya Met urges farmers to conserve soil moisture in July

The Kenya Meteorological Service Authority has warned farmers to prepare for dry and sunny conditions across most of the country throughout July.

According to the July Farming Outlook bulletin issued on July 5, soil moisture is projected to decline steadily across most regions due to the expected dry spell.

Kenya Met stated that the dry conditions will favor harvesting, drying, and safe storage of mature crops such as maize in western counties including Kakamega and Bungoma as well as Machakos and Embu.

Coastal counties such as Kilifi and Kwale are however expected to receive near- to above-average rainfall while the Central Highlands and Nairobi will see occasional light showers.

Farmers have been urged to use mulching to conserve remaining soil moisture and to irrigate standing crops where possible. Temperatures are forecast to be warmer than usual except in the Central Highlands.
