Michael Johnston, star of the 2026 hit film Obsession, has expressed interest in portraying a meaningful queer character in an upcoming project. The openly gay actor said he may write the story himself. He shared these thoughts during a recent podcast appearance.
Johnston, known for his breakout performance as the character Bear in Obsession, discussed his career goals on the I’ve Never Said This Before podcast. The film has become Focus Features’ highest grossing title ever after surpassing $300 million worldwide.
He explained his desire to take on a “really meaningful” and “really intentional queer role.” Johnston noted that while a character’s sexuality has not been a primary factor in his choices, his experiences growing up in the Bible Belt have shaped his perspective.
The actor reflected on his earlier role as Corey Bryant on MTV’s Teen Wolf from 2015 to 2017. He recalled receiving thousands of messages from viewers who said the portrayal helped them accept themselves and come out to their families.
Johnston added that he is looking forward to creating such a story, possibly by writing it himself.
