Mother finds solace in son's organ donation after fatal market accident

A 23-year-old man died after a truck plowed through a market in Bucheon on Nov. 13, 2025. His family chose to donate his heart, lungs and liver, saving three lives.

Moon Young-in was helping his mother, Choi Seo-young, carry groceries at Bucheon Jeil Market when a one-ton truck struck him. At Ewha Womans University Seoul Hospital, neurosurgeon Cho Dong-young determined brain death after swelling and bleeding worsened.

The family agreed to organ donation after two brain-death tests and review by the determination committee. Korea Organ Donation Agency coordinator Kim Young-ha guided them. An honor walk took place at 3 p.m. before surgery.

Young-in’s heart, lungs and liver were donated. The family later gave 5.4 million won to his welfare center. One recipient sent a letter of thanks on New Year’s Eve. Choi said she hopes the recipients live full lives.
