North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has called for further expanding the country's nuclear assets with a goal of overtaking the world, state media reported Tuesday.
The Korean Central News Agency reported that the second plenary meeting of the Ninth Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea was held for three days from Saturday through Monday. The meeting was presided over by Kim Jong-un to assess policies in the first half of the year and review the agenda from the February Party Congress.
The meeting reaffirmed the commitment to expanding nuclear forces as the core of military sovereignty and unanimously decided to thoroughly exercise the position of a nuclear weapons state. Kim set forth tasks to increase powerful defense assets without pause and with a goal of overtaking the world.
The party also pledged to accelerate construction of a 10,000-ton-class strategic guided missile cruiser decided in April. Jo Yong-won was elected secretary of the Party's Central Committee.
