A sudden downpour on Monday morning exposed heavy leakages in some stations along the Poonamallee-Porur elevated section of corridor 4 in Chennai Metro Rail's 118.9 km phase II project, which was slated for imminent launch.
The Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety granted final clearance for the Poonamallee-Porur stretch in the last week of February, subject to curbs on speed and frequency. However, the safety certificate restricted train services on the Porur-Vadapalani stretch until certain civil works are completed.
Chennai Metro Rail decided against opening the Poonamallee-Porur stretch alone, opting instead to launch services up to Vadapalani for greater commuter benefit. This has postponed the entire stretch's opening. As reported by The Hindu, the rain highlighted these persistent issues.
