Shooting in Midland, Texas leaves one dead and 10 injured

A gunman opened fire in Midland, Texas, on Friday morning, killing one person and wounding 10 others before dying in a standoff with police. The suspect had been wanted after a vehicle chase earlier in the week.

The incident began around 8 a.m. local time when the suspect, identified as 45-year-old Victor Mata Villarreal, fired on police and bystanders in the southwestern part of the city. He barricaded himself in an abandoned veterinary clinic and was later found dead.

Villarreal had escaped capture after shooting at officers during a vehicle chase on Wednesday night. He was wanted for attempted capital murder of a peace officer. No officers were injured in the Friday shooting.

The victim who died was identified as Ed Scott, a city employee involved in local softball organizations. Nine victims were treated at Midland Memorial Hospital, with four requiring surgery.

Midland Mayor Lori Blong said the city is praying for those affected. Governor Greg Abbott expressed sadness over the incident and offered support to the victims and the community.
