A 23-year-old man was taken into custody in Philadelphia on Tuesday night in connection with a shooting at Wilmington Hospital that left one person dead and another injured. Wilmington Police responded to reports of gunfire at the facility around 3:30 p.m.
Wilmington Police Chief Wilfredo Campos said officers found two gunshot victims at the hospital on the 500 block of West 14th Street. One victim died at the scene while the condition of the second remained unclear immediately after the incident.
The suspect faces pending charges and is awaiting extradition to Delaware. The hospital was placed on lockdown for several hours before the restriction was lifted.
Wilmington Mayor John Carney described the shooting as senseless and offered thoughts for hospital staff. Delaware Gov. Matt Meyer called it a sobering reminder of gun violence.
A patient guide at the hospital said he heard shots that sounded like firecrackers before evacuating as trained. The emergency department diverted patients during the response.
