A 78-year-old Clarkston man has been sentenced to 23 years in prison for fatally shooting his neighbor over ongoing noise complaints involving loud music, including a Mister Rogers song.
David Boyd pleaded guilty to second-degree murder with a firearm enhancement and first-degree unlawful possession of a gun. The shooting occurred on January 28, 2025, when Boyd confronted 53-year-old Chad VanScotter at his apartment after accusing him of bullying him for months with noise that prevented sleep.
Boyd told police he went to VanScotter's door with a .38-caliber revolver. He claimed VanScotter swung a long stick at him before Boyd opened fire, striking the victim multiple times including in the forehead. Boyd later called 911 instead of carrying out a planned suicide.
Court records show Boyd was sentenced on June 12 after agreeing to a plea deal in Asotin County Superior Court. He had written notes beforehand stating the neighbor had pushed him past his limit and that bullies deserve such outcomes.
