Cali's Metro has completed implementing Women's MIO Zones in all 166 articulated buses, providing exclusive spaces for women in the first wagon of each vehicle. This initiative, successfully piloted in July, aims to enhance safety and comfort for the 70% of users who are women. It integrates with the Purple Protocol to prevent gender violence.
In Cali, the MIO mass transit system has taken a significant step toward gender equity by completing the Women's MIO Zones in all its articulated buses. These exclusive areas, located in the first wagon of each of the 166 operational vehicles, are distinguished by pink seat backs for quick identification.
The measure stems from a pilot test launched in July, where 30 buses were equipped with this signage. During that phase, female users showed greater appropriation of the spaces and an improved perception of safety and comfort in their daily trips. Cali's Metro highlights that 70% of MIO users are women, driving this gender-perspective approach.
This initiative complements the Purple Protocol, in place for a year, which sets up care routes and channels to prevent and handle gender violence cases within the system. The entity stresses the shared responsibility of all users to respect these zones, not aiming to separate passengers but to provide a calmer environment for those who prefer it.
To ensure success, Cali's Metro will continue pedagogical campaigns in stations, buses, and terminals, raising awareness among the public about the proper use of these differentiated spaces.
