The Amhara Regional Justice Bureau granted amnesty to 1,224 convicts on the basis of a decision by the regional administration council.

Bureau head Dr. Ayalew Abate stated that the council issued the order during its sixth round, fifth year, ninth regular session. The decision took into account cases requiring leadership directives for amnesty, determining that the convicts committed minor offenses and compensated victims where required.

Those convicted of serious crimes, such as rape against women and children, or serving life sentences, were excluded from the amnesty.

Officials expect the released convicts, who demonstrated good behavior, skills, and loyalty in prison, to become law-abiding citizens and contributors to society.
