Anti-terror police kill several suspected terrorists at Kenya-Somalia border

A multi-agency security team in Kenya gunned down several suspected terrorists attempting to cross the border from Somalia under cover of darkness. The swift action prevented a potential national security threat along the volatile frontier. This incident highlights ongoing concerns about rising insecurity in the region.

On Sunday, November 30, 2025, specialised officers from Kenya's Counter Terrorism Policing unit detected unusual activity along the Kenya-Somalia border early in the morning. A group of militants tried to infiltrate the country, but the multi-agency team, including counter-terrorism department officers, intercepted them before they could enter. In the ensuing confrontation, the security forces used superior firepower to neutralise all the suspects on the spot, killing several of them.

The Anti-Terrorism Unit issued a statement confirming the operation's success. "A group of terrorists attempted to infiltrate our border. Our Special teams manning our border taught them a lesson. Our superior firepower and committed officers will always win against the enemies of our nation," the unit stated. Images released by the officers depicted the bodies of the suspected terrorists on dusty ground, though the exact number killed remains unclear.

This event occurs amid escalating insecurity along the border, where suspected terrorists frequently attempt crossings from Somalia. Just one month prior, in Garissa County, the Special Operations Group thwarted an Al-Shabaab plot by engaging eight militants who had set up improvised explosive devices in the Welmerer-Yumbia area. That operation recovered several assembled explosives intended for attacks on civilians.

Security officials have praised local communities for their role in providing timely intelligence, which has been crucial in averting crises. The coordinated response underscores Kenya's efforts to maintain vigilance and protect its borders from external threats.
