Germany plans record crowd for 2027 ice hockey championship

Germany aims to host the opening match of the 2027 Ice Hockey World Championship at Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen. Organizers hope to surpass the existing attendance record of 77,830 set in 2010.

The host nation has selected the large football stadium, home to Schalke 04, despite official host cities being Düsseldorf and Mannheim. The arena normally seats 62,000 for football but can be reconfigured for hockey without seating to improve views of the ice.
