On the second day of his official visit to Ethiopia, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a joint session of parliament, received an honor medal from PM Abiy Ahmed, and attended the Adwa Dam inauguration, further solidifying the strategic partnership announced the previous day.
Following his initial meeting with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on Tahsas 7, where both leaders committed to enhanced cooperation, PM Modi continued his visit on Tahsas 8, 2018, in Addis Ababa. At the Addis Ababa International Convention Center, he was awarded an honor medal. PM Abiy emphasized the deep Ethiopia-India cultural history and future-oriented partnership built on study, collaboration, and purpose.
Modi then addressed the joint session of the 6th House of Peoples' Representatives and 5th Federation Councils, praising Ethiopia's strategic role among ancient civilizations and its inspirational power. He highlighted how their cooperation would tackle global challenges and unlock opportunities in environmental protection, digital transformation, economic growth, technology, cyber security, capacity building, agriculture, education, and health—building on prior discussions in trade, investment, renewable energy, aviation, and military collaboration.
Modi also inaugurated the Adwa Dam, commending Addis Ababa's greenery and lauding it as a symbol of self-reliance. The visit elevates historical ties—dating back over 2,000 years and formalized in 1948—to a strategic partnership, amplifying Global South solidarity.
