Borussia Dortmund announced on Friday afternoon the early contract extension with centre-back Nico Schlotterbeck. The 26-year-old, who has been with BVB since 2022 and serves as vice-captain and key player, signed a new deal until 2031. "Kicker" and "Ruhr Nachrichten" first reported it.
Months of speculation about Schlotterbeck's future have now ended. The national team player was repeatedly linked with clubs like Real Madrid and FC Bayern München. At the end of March, Schlotterbeck had firmly denied reports of an imminent extension, citing the complicated situation after sporting director Sebastian Kehl's departure.
Recent talks with managing director Lars Ricken and sporting director Ole Book hinted at an upcoming decision. Unconfirmed reports mention an exit clause in the new contract, potentially applicable from this summer for a few clubs at 50 to 60 million euros, as speculated by "Kicker".
