Timrå IK has lost defenseman Alfons Freij ahead of the upcoming SHL season. The 21-year-old has decided to remain in North America with the Winnipeg Jets rather than return on loan. The club confirmed the move on its website.
Freij signed a three-year contract with the Jets before last season and was loaned to Timrå for 2025/26. The Jets exercised their recall option, ending plans for another loan period.
The departure adds to Timrå's challenges on defense. The team now has seven defensemen under contract after previously adding Tim Barkemo and Wilhelm Hallquisth. Sport chief Kent Norberg said the club is monitoring the market for a possible addition if it fits both sportingly and financially.
Freij recorded 11 points in 42 SHL games last season. Timrå has also lost forwards Jonathan Dahlén and Emil Pettersson from last year's roster. No transfer fee applies for Freij.
