Winter approaches Sweden with snow nationwide

Winter grips Sweden with cold air and snowfall from north to south over the coming week. Meteorologists warn of minus degrees at night across the country and recommend switching to winter tires. Snow showers are expected as early as the weekend in the north and later in the south.

According to SMHI, cold air is spreading across all of Sweden, much colder than earlier in the week. This cold air is expected to persist throughout the next week, at least until November 24. Nighttime will bring minus degrees across the country, while daytime in the north may also see sub-zero temperatures. In southern Sweden, daytime highs are expected around zero or a few plus degrees.

As early as Saturday, snow showers will move in over the Norrland mountains, with snowfall passing eastward over parts of Norrland. From Monday afternoon, snow showers could reach the Uppland coast and Stockholm county, though the extent remains uncertain. During Thursday, a snow area may move in over Götaland and Svealand.

“It is cold air that has spread across the entire country, it is significantly colder than it was earlier in the week. And the cold air will stay here throughout the next week as it looks right now,” says Caroline Vahlberg, meteorologist at SMHI.

She emphasizes the uncertainty in the forecasts but urges preparation. “It is still very uncertain, but one should prepare for snow even in southern Sweden this week. The recommendation is of course to put on winter tires if you haven't already done so.”

SMHI's forecasts extend ten days ahead and indicate persistent cold.
