Ángel Botto Oakley, former president of the ANFP Discipline Tribunal, died on Monday at age 77 in a Viña del Mar clinic. The lawyer, a lifelong Santiago Wanderers fan, had been battling respiratory issues for two months. His death brings sorrow to Chilean football.
On Monday, May 4, 2026, at 4:20 p.m., the death of Ángel Botto Oakley was confirmed in a Viña del Mar clinic, where he had been hospitalized for nearly two months due to respiratory problems. Born on March 15, 1949, the University of Chile law graduate led the ANFP Discipline Tribunal until 2023 and later worked as a sports commentator in the Fifth Region.
Botto was a lifelong Santiago Wanderers fan. In 2024, the club banned him from entering a match against Deportes Santa Cruz at the Elías Figueroa stadium in Valparaíso. "This is a constitutional violation, to my constitutional guarantees. I will pursue this in courts," he stated at the time, a situation later rectified.
He also openly criticized his successor, Exequiel Segall, over a sanction against Brayan Cortés. "It seems unacceptable that president Segall, when giving and justifying the sanction to Cortés, previously praised the intervention of the latter's defense lawyer," he said. His health issues began in summer with a urinary infection that led to a lung bacteria, worsened last week by pulmonary edema.
The news shocks Chilean football, where Botto remained active commenting on regulations in social media and press until the end.
