A 5.5 kg white Brahma rooster became the star attraction at the 2025 Nairobi County trade and agriculture show organized by the Kenya Agricultural Society (ASK). The nine-month-old bird belongs to Fredrick Omondi, a farmer from Kitengela. Its win stemmed from its impressive size, health, and superior care.
The ASK show ran from September 29 to October 5, 2025, where Fredrick Omondi's rooster, from Kimalat Holdings Ltd in Kimalat, Kitengela, Kajiado County, was declared the best in the poultry category. The Brahma breed rooster, with long white feathers reaching its feet and a broad chest, weighs 5.5 kg, compared to typical chickens at 2.5 to 3 kg. Judges evaluated its size, health, age, and care.
Omondi entered farming three years ago and now keeps over 300 Brahma chickens. "This rooster is gentle, bold, and appealing. Some raise them like ornamental birds due to their beauty," Omondi says. Brahma originates from South America and is known for its large body with ample meat and heavy feathering. This bird is the second generation; the first weighed 7 kg and died in 2024.
His success secret is natural farming, allowing chickens free range during the day to forage for protein-rich foods like grasshoppers, ants, greens, and kitchen scraps. "Protein is the key pillar of growth. I give them insects, leaves, kitchen leftovers, and the result is healthy chickens with astonishing weight," Omondi explains. This system cuts costs by about 70%.
Besides Brahma, Omondi has around 400 Kenbro chickens, ornamental birds like Japanese Silkie and Polish Bantams, and over 800 quails. He sells 100 Brahma and 800 Kenbro chicks monthly. Starting with three Brahma and Sh50,000 capital, he now plans to expand using solar power for incubation. He insists the prize rooster won't sell for less than Sh10,000.
