Hong Kong cancels rainstorm warnings amid persistent showers

The Hong Kong Observatory cancelled all rainstorm signals at 9.30pm on Saturday after issuing multiple alerts during heavy showers and thunderstorms.

The first amber alert was issued and lifted at 11.30am. A second amber alert followed at 6.45pm. A red warning was issued at 7.55pm and downgraded to amber at 8.55pm. Heavy showers brought more than 30mm of rainfall across Hong Kong, with up to 60mm recorded in Central and Western district and Cheung Chau. The Observatory recorded more than 5,700 lightning strikes between 9am and 11am, including 1,810 cloud-to-ground strikes. Winds reached about 80km/h on Cheung Chau. Heavy showers and squally thunderstorms are expected until midweek, while high temperatures will ease.
